Hong Kong– and Shenzhen, China–based architecture and design firm Atelier Global has been named the winner of the competition to design a new library and public plaza in Shenzhen’s Long Hua arts district. Referred to as Book City, the project is moving forward as part of the city’s effort to promote creative and cultural industries. It is slated for completion in 2020.
Spanning more than 489,750 square feet, the six-story, mixed-use complex will be appointed with greenery and feature a breathable skin to filter natural light and ventilation. The facade will also comprise vertical shading devices to filter light at varying angles to create an effect reminiscent of flipping the pages of a book. In addition to a library, the flexible public space will be outfitted with retail, dining, and co-working spaces. Dynamic cultural spaces will be installed on four sides of the building, and connect to the atrium at the core.
Visible from street level, landscaped terraces will reinforce the outdoors inside. A sports facility will crown the structure as well.
